Instagram Chief Shares Deeper Insights into Content Ranking on Threads
In the quest to become a Twitter/X rival, Threads needs to up its game in trending topics and enhance real-time engagement around major events. This has been a common critique of Threads, with many users still relying on X for updates on sports, world events, and celebrity content.
Threads currently lacks a Trending Topics display and is just beginning to test topic tags in selected regions. Additionally, there’s no way to sort search results chronologically, making it challenging to stay updated with evolving news stories as they happen.
Over the weekend, Instagram’s chief, Adam Mosseri, shed light on why Threads hasn’t prioritized these features just yet. In a more detailed response, Mosseri explained the challenge of preventing spammers from flooding the platform with irrelevant content by using trending words or tags, a common issue on X.

Threads is limiting the use of topic tags to one per post to combat spam and maintain a quality conversation space. Mosseri acknowledged the difficulty of removing spam content from trending results without imposing unfair restrictions.
This approach aligns with Threads’ mission to create a more positive user experience than Twitter and X. While some users may seek a Twitter alternative, Threads aims to provide a healthier and more engaging real-time conversation environment.
Mosseri emphasized that the Threads team is continuously iterating on content ranking methods and exploring ways to facilitate real-time engagement, including ranking posts based on different parameters. They may also consider highlighting top stories from reputable news outlets or ranking profiles based on trust and newsworthiness.
While there are no easy solutions, Threads’ efforts to address these challenges could lead to improved online engagement, setting it apart from the competition. If anyone can tackle this major challenge, it’s Meta.
