Slide into Status: WhatsApp’s Private Mentions are Here
WhatsApp has rolled out the new “Private Mentions” feature for Status to all users, introducing another way to spark engagement with temporary updates.
What Are Private Mentions?
Status, WhatsApp’s version of Stories, allows users to post photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours. Although it hasn’t reached the popularity of Instagram’s Stories, it remains a useful feature for staying connected.
With the new Private Mentions feature, WhatsApp users can tag others directly within a Status post. When tagged, those individuals receive a notification about the mention, but the tag remains invisible to others. Essentially, only the mentioned users get the prompt, drawing their attention without making it public.
How Does It Work?
- Users can mention up to five people in a single Status update.
- Mentions are not limited to existing contacts — any WhatsApp user can be tagged and will be able to view the Status, even if they are outside the usual audience settings.
This update offers an easy way to encourage interaction, whether by drawing specific people’s attention or motivating them to engage with or share the post. Brands and influencers, in particular, could use Private Mentions to increase visibility by prompting followers to re-share content.
Potential Drawbacks
However, frequent mentions may become bothersome for some users. If the feature is overused, it could lead to annoyance, potentially driving users away from Status updates altogether. The effectiveness of Private Mentions will likely depend on personal preferences and how creatively users leverage the feature.
WhatsApp recommends experimenting with Private Mentions to see how they impact reach and engagement.
The feature is now available in the latest version of WhatsApp.
