Algorithm Update Over At X!
In an unexpected twist, X is gearing up for a major algorithm update, shifting its focus toward “informational/entertaining” content. This marks a notable departure from Elon Musk’s usual musings on societal collapse and divisive topics that have dominated his feed for the past two years.
A Call for Positivity
Musk recently urged users to bring more positive content to the platform. While this announcement is certainly a pivot, his personal posts remain… consistent. From highlighting controversial topics to sparking intense debates, Musk’s activity continues to generate plenty of buzz—albeit not always the cheerful kind.
Yet, the planned algorithm tweak could mean good news for content creators aiming to grow their audience. The platform seems set to reward entertaining, engaging videos and posts, aligning with a broader industry trend.
Following Meta’s Playbook?
The move echoes strategies adopted by Meta, which has scaled back political content in favour of lighter, more entertaining material, primarily through Reels. By reducing divisive posts and promoting user-friendly video content, Meta has reported significant increases in app usage.
It’s clear this formula works—TikTok pioneered it, after all. TikTok’s algorithm thrives by serving users a constant stream of engaging videos, prioritising entertainment over direct engagement. Meta has followed suit, and now X appears to be exploring similar territory.
What Could Change on X?
For now, X users can still toggle between the “Following” and “For You” feeds, unlike TikTok or Meta, where algorithm-defined content dominates. However, if X’s goal is to boost time spent on the platform, encouraging more use of the “For You” feed may be inevitable.
This aligns with Musk’s ambition to push more video content, especially if it can emulate TikTok’s ability to captivate users for extended periods.
A Shift Worth Watching
It’s worth noting the irony of X advocating for positivity while Musk himself remains one of the most polarising figures on the platform. His influence could present a fascinating challenge as X seeks to reconcile his divisive presence with its new direction.
For creators, however, the message is clear: entertaining, positive, video-first content is likely the key to maximising reach on X in 2025. While no official algorithm changes have been implemented yet, updates will be shared via the X Engineering Team handle.
